Shabbat Services

Our doors are open to all who seek to worship and learn.

Shabbat is celebrated from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. People are encouraged not to work during this time, and to take time to rest and reflect, study, and spend time with family and community.

Shacharit Shabbat Services - Saturdays

Torah Study

Shabbat morning starts with Torah Study at 9:00am. Rabbi Finestone leads the class discussion,  providing historical and religious context to the weekly parashah (Torah portion). Topics are enthusiastically discussed by members of the Torah Study group. During this Hebrew year, 5783, the discussion is focusing on women's role in Torah.

Shacharit Shabbat

A welcoming Shacharit service is held each Saturday morning, beginning at 10:15 am. This includes a reading from the Torah and a large amount of community participation. After the service, we gather for Kiddish and conversation.

During services, Jewish men are asked to cover their heads with a kippah, and many women elect to do so as well. A variety of head coverings are available at Har Shalom. The wearing of a tallit (prayer shawl) is welcome. If one is called to the Bimah, we ask that one wears a tallit (prayer shawl) which can be found at the entrance to the sanctuary.

Transliteration for the Hebrew of the prayers is available at all services, and Rabbi Finestone encourages all people to take advantage of the rich commentary in our various prayer books.

Kabbalat Shabbat - Friday Evenings

Most Friday evening services are held virtually, yet once a month our community gathers for special,  celebratory in-person services. These monthly services feature special topics, unique musical performances, and important community events. If you have an idea for a service, please feel free to reach out to Rabbi Finestone.

Shabbat Jr. - Select Friday Evenings

Shabbat Jr. is the perfect Friday evening Shabbat service for families with young children, geared especially toward kids aged 3-8. These child-friendly services meet once a month on Friday evenings from 5:30-6:00pm. Zoom is not available.

Check the Har Shalom calendar for upcoming dates.
